Currently, the first meaning of “race” in the dictionary of the RAE speaks of “caste or quality of origin or lineage”.
The second meaning, describes it as “each of the groups into which some biological species are subdivided and whose differential characters are perpetuated by inheritance”.
For Bermúdez de Castro, doctor in biological sciences and professor of paleontology at the Complutense University of Madrid, the second meaning “continues to be present with the idea of differentiating some human groups.”
Likewise, Bermúdez de Castro requested that words in which the term race appears be reviewed, such as “ethnicity”, “anthropography” (“part of anthropology that deals with the description of human races and their varieties”) or “monogenism”. (the “doctrine according to which all human races are descended from a single primitive type”).
In a statement from the language congress, it was stated that “The RAE is already working on new meanings in case there is a possible discriminatory use of language“.
