One of the things that fascinates me most about streaming is how platforms have transformed the television ecosystem. Specifically in Spain there is synergy between traditional television channels and platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Whether premiering before (‘The one that is coming’) in streaming than in the open or as an enviable second window that gives new life to series that, just as they have failed. Something quite important at a time when the times of astronomical screen quotas on television for fiction are far away.
Here it is Netflix the greatest ally both for cases of success and failure since the platform has seen a whole secret weapon in television programming. So much so that half of the series in the top 10 of the platform are Spanish. More specifically from Telecinco and Televisión Española.
The most watched series on Netflix
As I am writing this news item, we have ‘Entrevías’ (1st place), ‘El Príncipe’ (2nd), ‘La caza’ (4th), ‘Drought’ (7th) and ‘Ana Tramel’ in the top 10 series. The game’ (10th). Two from Mediaset and the other three from TVE. Curiously, although the first ones are successes on television, the ones on the public channel went a bit without pain or glory (not to mention failures) in their broadcast.
And this is now, because it is also common to see much more veteran series like ‘There is no one who lives here’ hanging around the list of the most viewed series on the platform. A new life for these series that is not strange because the power base of any streaming service is the catalog series. And if they are long better.
That yes, neither we should think of Netflix as a gold rushespecially in this time of image crisis due to its limitation in sharing accounts and that this multiplication of exposure gives these series more seasons (not everything can be ‘La casa de papel’) but it is a quite welcome exposure and a great opportunity to see things that weren’t on our radar either.
