Like the old man of the meme (“Where is it that I see it?”), some of us have spent season 1 of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ looking for the aforementioned rings. And in the last moments of the final episode, we witness the forging of the three belonging to the “elven kings under heaven”.
A origin of the elven rings that comes with some other change regarding Tolkien’s texts by the decision, by Patrick McKay and JD Payne, to change the “incarnation” of Sauron for the series.
In the texts, it assumes the aspect of Annatar, who claims to be sent by the Valar to help the Elves (the Noldor) beautify Middle-earth. Sauron would induce the blacksmiths commanded by Celebrimbor (Charles Edward) to create what in total would be nineteen ringswith the hidden purpose of, through them, corrupting the main races (dwarves, elves and men) to evil.
Something similar to what happens in the series, with Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) leading the elves into the art of ring making. On the other hand, is she a Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) just knocked out by her mystical/psychic fight? with Sauron, which suggests that there are three instead of one. And so it is done.
The three rings of the elves
These rings, which are built with the purpose of saving the elven race through the use of mithril, also have different characteristics:
- Vilya (sapphire): the air ring is capable of healing wounds inflicted by EVIL (that one, in capital letters, you already know why). This would be inherited by Elrond.
- Nenya (diamond): The water ring possesses the power of protection and preservation. Also, with him, Galadriel could protect herself from Sauron and be aware of what happens far away.
- Narya (ruby): The Ring of Fire (which would end up in Gandalf’s hands over the years) has the power to resist domination and, moreover, inspire hearts to brave and honorable deeds.
Although in the series they show us that the rings are made with the gold and silver of Valinor (taken from Galadriel’s dagger) in Tolkien’s work each ring is made of a different material. girl it is made of mithril (with a diamond), being the only one that has this metal; narya it is made of gold, while it is not known what metal it is made of vilya.
Even though they are Sauron’s idea, the elven rings are the only ones that were not forged by him. Being the most powerful after the One, these are the most coveted by the Dark Lord. In the Middle-earth story, once Celebrimbor and company realize the Enemy’s involvement, they try to destroy them but they couldn’t. It is said that only the fire of a dragon is capable of destroying them (as has happened with some of the dwarven rings).
Faced with this impossibility, the elves decided to keep them hidden, something that was transferred in images in the trilogy of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ when Galadriel shows hers to Frodo. Once introduced in the series, we will have to see what importance these rings will have in future seasons.
