It’s here. At last. The favorite time of year for many has arrived and the torrijas have returned to our lives. It is true that, if we wanted to, we could eat them all year round. But, a bit like the roscón de reyes, it would lose its grace. Part of how delicious they are and how special they are is the fact that they are left for a specific week of the year. Mind you, what a week.
We know how to make the best traditional milk torrijas, but there is not always the time or the desire to make them and we may be tempted to buy some of the ones sold in supermarkets. Well, we have bad news and that is that the OCU does not advise it at all. A group of pastry experts has analyzed for the Organization of Consumers and Users the six French toast that are sold in supermarkets and half of them fail.
The problem? All. Well, maybe not everything, but the flavor, the texture and the aftertaste. And unfortunately, the three that pass do not get a very good grade either. The main criticism of the experts is that they have little flavor and, in addition, they are not juicy and leave a bitter aftertaste. Everything you don’t want in a French toast.
In addition to that, the ready-to-eat French toast options that we find in supermarkets they have many unnecessary colourings, preservatives and other additives which, of course, the landlady does not have. Some of them, as is the case of Alcampo, even substitute sugar or honey for glucose syrup, which also makes it lose points and, in fact, be the worst valued.
They are followed by fried French toast from Ahorramás and El Corte Inglés Selección, both also suspended. With a five raspado (53 points out of 100) are the French toast in sunflower oil from Carrefour and the caramelized ones from Casa Eceiza. The only torrijas that pass the fair approval are those of Mercadona, which obtain 60 points out of 100. According to the experts, this French toast shows a balance of flavors and aromas, and its texture is juicy. Of course, all that glitters is not gold and it is the one that contains the most additives of all, which lowers points. In adults it is the most recommended of the six, but it is not recommended for children.
