If you have or want a pet, you have to know that it is accompanied by extensive legislation. Yes, having a pet means complying with a series of rules and that is why it is advisable to know them, and if not consult them before making certain decisions.
It is necessary to know all the rules of a pet if you do not want to be upset with a fine. Each municipality imposes its own regulations on the possession and care of animals on transport by car, walks, taking it to the beach, droppings…
Fine for taking the dog without a leash
Walking with the dog and letting it run and play is usually something common in many destinations, and at the same time it sounds great because you think about the freedom of the pet. But taking the dog without a leash is prohibited, since the legislation in Spain requires the canine to be carried on a leash, only being able to release it in the spaces enabled for canines. The fine for taking the dog loose ranges between 90 and 300 euros, and it increases if the breed is considered dangerous (Pitbull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Rottweiler, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Akita Inu or Staffordshire Bull Terrier, among others).
Depending on the Autonomous Community in which you reside, these breeds may vary and include the Doberman, the Tiber Mastiff, the Neapolitan Mastiff, the Presa Canario and the Presa Mallorcan also on the list of potentially dangerous dogs.
In addition, potentially dangerous dogs must be walked on a non-extendable leash and no more than 2 meters long.

Use of the muzzle
Another frequently asked question if you have a dog is when should they wear a muzzle? It is not always mandatory but it is in certain cases, especially for travel.
In many means of transport it is mandatory, such as in RENFE Cercanías trains or in boat trips when traveling outside the area intended for pets.
It is also mandatory in all walks in public places and spaces of dogs considered potentially dangerous according to Royal Decree 287/2002: purebred dogs, dogs that show a markedly aggressive character and dogs that meet all or most of the characteristics described in the Royal Decree 287/2002.
Added to this Royal Decree are obligations provided for in regional laws and municipal ordinances that could extend the compulsory nature of the muzzle to other times and circumstances.
In this case, the fine can reach 3,000 euros
Also the muzzle is recommended (not mandatory) at the following times:
- To prevent bites in the case of dogs that, based on their history or temperament, show aggressive behavior.
- To avoid accidents in veterinary clinics or dog grooming salons
- To avoid risks when walking through areas where the dog usually picks up food, garbage or feces from the ground.
