Andalusia is famous, among many other things, for its white villages. However, this color has had competition in Malaga. There, in the Serranía de Ronda, is Júzcar, a small town with just over 200 inhabitants. Though, what has made it famous throughout the world are its blue streets. And without needing to have sea.
Until 2011, Juzcar it was just another white town but, that year, they began to differentiate themselves by replacing that color on their facades with blue (cemetery and church included). It was a promotional act by Sony for the world premiere of the film The Smurfs. And, although it should be something temporary, its inhabitants they decided to leave it that way in a popular consultation.
The play didn’t go wrong for them because that make over would end up putting this town on the map internationally and is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the world for having charm and being picturesque. Although, yes, they have not been allowed to promote themselves as “Smurf people” due to copyright issues.
The main tourist attraction is to walk through its instagrammable streets, where the St. Catherine’s Church, from the 16th century, also painted blue. In addition, another point of interest is the ruins of what was the first tin factory from Spainwhich was built in 1731. Special mention also deserves its numerous viewpoints.
More related to the blue motif of the town, there is a graffiti route that is made up of 14 Smurf-themed murals. Each of them has a QR code that can be scanned to tell a story. In addition, scattered around the town there are several huge statues of the characters in these cartoons and adventure zones for children.
To complete the visit, since the town can be seen in two hours, we can extend the radius to its surroundings in the municipality, where you can do various hiking trails and visit a Mycological Museum in which you will find all the knowledge about the variety of native mushrooms. In addition to the essential town of Ronda.
