Hollywood wouldn’t be Hollywood if it didn’t continue to be obsessed with revive franchises, sagas and licenses that seemed to have fallen into oblivion to adapt them to new audiences that, as a general rule —and except for pleasant surprises— do not usually appreciate the efforts of some filmmakers in love with the original material, and in this case it has been the turn of ‘Fletch ‘by Chevy Chase.
Fletcher’s Return
Almost 40 years have passed since the comedian and actor under the orders of Michael Ritchie to give life to the investigative journalist in ‘Fletch the chameleon’ and ‘Fletch revives’; two comedies loaded with intrigue, crimes and mysteries based on the novels by Gregory McDonald. Now, in the middle of 2022, Greg Mottola will give a twist to the formula.
The director of that jewel entitled ‘Supersalidos’, of feature films like ‘Paul’ and of series like ‘Dave’ or ‘The Newsroom’, will be in charge of ‘Confess, Fletch’; a movie that finds its greatest claim in its cast, which will bring together John Hamm as John Slattery after their celebrated collaboration in the prestigious ‘Mad Men’. You can see the trailer on these lines.
Mottola has spoken like this about Slattery’s signingwhich was suggested by Hamm himself.
“I’ve gotten to know John over the years and I really, really enjoy his role as an actor, so I loved the idea. In fact, the first day of shooting where we started shooting his scenes was a great day.” , because these guys communicate so easily that they got into a really fun and enjoyable groove right away.”
Something new
In this new Fletch the journalist is semi-retired, living in Europe and writing about travel, art and lifestyle… until you are hired for find out who is responsible for the theft of two million dollars worth of art from the villa of a Roman count. This will turn the life upside down for Fletcher, who will also be framed for murder after a dead body is found in his Airbnb when he returns to Boston to investigate the case.
However, although the plot can be perfectly aligned with what was seen in the two films of the eighties, Greg Mottola has made it clear that they will try to distance themselves from the work of Chase and Ritchie.
“The reason we didn’t ask Chevy Chase to be in the movie is not because we don’t like the original movies, because they do, but because we thought this had to be something new. There’s a lot of things Chevy did that aren’t there. in the Fletch books: his comedic style, the slapstick, and all the names and costumes. We thought it wouldn’t be cool to steal all of that. We reference the original, we celebrate it, but we try to balance it somewhere between detective mystery and comedy. , possibly more than the original”.
‘Confess, Fletch’ will be released next September 16 in the United States. In Spain, for the moment, it does not have a release date.
