Located in the mountainous conglomerate of Sant Llorenç del Munt, the municipality of Mura is part of an environment where the abundance of vegetation and fauna have always linked its population to the land. Today, many of its terraces and vineyards are abandoned, but the place retains the charm of a splendor-filled Middle Agesvisible in its old town, with its stone houses or in the Romanesque church of Sant Martí.
Since there is evidence of its existence in the 10th century, Mura has been a small town (currently it has 227 inhabitants). Among the economic activities that have given it wealth, the cultivation of vineyards stands out, until in the 19th century when phylloxera forced it to be replaced by the production of charcoal, lime and the textile industry.
Thus, when the spinning mill closed in 1962, many inhabitants left the town. Twelve years later, the creation of the natural park triggered the transformation of Mura into a tourist municipalityespecially from the numerous second homes that were established in this place during the last quarter of the 20th century.
The medieval center of Mura It is its great claim, due to the atmosphere that is breathed and the medieval character that defines it, all surrounded by an enviable natural environment. Also of interest is Sant Marti church, whose structure dates from different periods (11th-12th, 15th and 17th centuries). It is the main architectural attraction of the town, with its magnificent Romanesque doorway.
In fact, the entire nucleus of Mura grew around it, which is well worth a walk through its quiet cobbled streets, arcades, stairs and steep alleys between houses of several centuries of existence. In the center there is also the Center d’Interpretació del Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i Serra de l’Obac, with the tourist information office, a good starting point to start discovering this place.
On the outskirts of the town rises the hermitage of Sant Antoni, built in 1716 with a single rectangular nave and a façade surmounted by a small bell tower. The highlight is the front porch built in 1818.
In addition, different natural landscapes of great beauty surround the town. Walking along marked trails you can explore the Mura cavesa cavity formed by a single gallery about 200 meters deep discovered by a peasant in the 19th century.
It is also a good plan to search the numerous fountains of the municipality (La Mascarosa, La Noguera or El Foradot), stroll along the water of the Riera de Nespres or discover some of the most interesting mills or farmhouses in Mura.
