While Spain lives in suspense due to the selection process of the song that will represent us in Eurovision 2023, Gloria Trevi has come to “make the Europe” giving a very personal interview to Risto Mejide in traveling with chester and singing a medley of his hits Glory and Everyone look at me in the second semifinal of the Benidorm Fest. And it is that the Mexican artist not only has a successful musical career, his life story is worthy of a soap opera.
everyone looks at her
If you didn’t know his name, surely you’ve ever danced Everyone look at me at a wedding or New Year’s Eve party. Although she can boast of having a long professional career full of great successes, this was the song in particular that elevated Gloria Trevi in the 2000s as the biggest Spanish-speaking LGBT icon. However, for the interpreter, who shone (literally) last night on the Benidorm Fest stage, the night has been dark on many occasions and without sequins.
While Everyone look at me It is a hymn of irreverence and a song to overcome the insults of others, based on the story of a friend of the singer who felt rejected by his parents when he confessed to them that he was gay. Trevi’s personal story is a real drama.
From success to jail
Nominated for the Latin Grammys and awarded by Billboard, the Mexican diva began her career in 1985 as part of the musical group Boquitas Pintadas. Four years later she became a solo bestseller, becoming famous for daring performances that left no one indifferent. Already in the 90s she tried her luck in the cinema and became the highest paid star of Mexican television.
However, in 1996 he announced that he was retiring from the stage due to spinal cancer suffered by his representative and partner, Sergio Andrade. What was not expected was end up passing five years in prison, three of them in Brazil and the other two in Mexico.
five years in prison
The singer and her mentor were accused of allegedly mistreating and abusing young girls under the promise of success. In January 2000, following an international persecution, Trevi and Andrade were arrested in Brazil and the singer was imprisoned for four years awaiting trial, which passed in a two meter cell wide by three long with a latrine fixed to the ground.

During his time in jail got pregnant and, although at first she accused the prison guards of having raped her, after the birth of her son Ángel Gabriel, the Mexican admitted that it was the result of having maintained relations with who had been his partner. Although Trevi affirmed that she had been forced by the officials themselves to sleep with her ex.
It would have to wait until 2004 for a judge to determine that there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations of rape, kidnapping and corruption of minors filed against her, for which she was released without charge. Andrade, on his side, was convicted of these crimes and spent almost seven years behind bars. Despite the fact that Andrade was portrayed as a violent serial pedophile and Trevi as her accomplice ”, the artist considers herself one more victim of Andrade.
As she herself has explained on several occasions, she met Andrade when she was only 15 years old and, from the first moment, she says she has lived among manipulations, beatings, shouting, abuse and punishment. What comes to be a total of 17 years of humiliation.
The death of his daughter in strange circumstances
Although her reputation and five years behind bars completely destroyed her, after her release the artist managed to relaunch her career with the hit of Everyone look at me and consolidate as one of the most famous artists in Latin America. However, she passed through jail It has not been the only misfortune that has marked his life.
Just two months before the arrest, Trevi had had to bury Ana Dalay, their first daughter, who died as a baby in strange circumstances, although everything indicates that it could have been a sudden death.
It all happened in the apartment that Andrade shared with seven young people. In a 2004 interview with the television presenter Adela Micha, Gloria Trevi recounted what happened that day: “I left the girl sleeping, and an argument began that took a long time,” commented the singer. “I wanted to go see my daughter. I started to feel restless,” she recalled.
According to his story, Sergio then asked one of the women who lived in the building to go see the girl in her room: “I realize that she did not return with the baby. Minutes passed, it seemed like an eternity to me. Suddenly I began to feel uneasy, because she did not return (…) Later I see her leave with the girl covered. There she whispered to me that she was asleepTrevi narrated.
At that moment, one of those present in the house made a “joke” asking if the minor was alive. “There he uncovered the girl and I realized that she was not well. She had a blue mouth, and she no longer had the rosiness of her cheeks.”, he described. According to her account, when she tried to go to a hospital, one of the girls stopped her at the door. She “she told me: ‘she is dead’. I saw her and she was really dead (…) The last thing I remember is that I touched her arm and she was rigid, ”she recounted.
new accusations
Just a few weeks ago, the American magazine rolling stones reported that a new civil lawsuit had been filed against her and Sergio Andrade for corruption of minors. This time it was a Los Angeles district court. which revived 20 years later the accusations that the couple recruited girls and adolescents to be part of a sexual abuse network.
In the lawsuit, the complainants claim that the singer approached them when they were 13 and 15 years old and lured them into joining the alleged musical training program led by Andrade. According to this version, the program served as cover of a sexual network of young girls that for years were exploited by Andrade, including Gloria Trevi herself.
Trevi responded quickly through a statement: “It is very painful for me and for all my family see false accusations resurface made against me more than 25 years ago and that have already been judged in several courts and in all instances I was absolutely acquitted,” she declared. However, as it is a civil lawsuit, the complainants are expected to demand compensation for the damage, which in almost all cases is usually financial compensation.
