The last four minutes of the movie are the perfect representation of a broken heart. Elio staring into the fire, close-ups of his face lit by the flames of a fireplace, and so, so much intimacy that you almost feel like you’re looking at something that should only belong to Timothée Chalamet’s character.
But behind this fantastic performance lies a song, Visions of Gideon by Sufjan Stevens. It’s just what Timothée Chalamet was listening to while this scene was taking place:
Director Luca Guadagnino asked Chalamet to listen to the song and react to it, in a wonderful acting exercise that, thanks to the magic of cinema, was erased from everyone’s eyes. The actor was wearing a headset that disappeared after digital retouching, leaving us alone with Elio and his pain.
One more secret that makes call me by your name a cinematic marvel.
