Korean series are a phenomenon on the rise and Netflix knows it. While they wait for the next season of ‘The Squid Game’ (the Korean fiction that has worked best for them), the platform has decided to bet on the Yeon Sang-ho’s new project (‘Train to Busan’), which will adapt the ‘Parasyte’ manga.

Yeon Sang-ho will be in charge of making the live action of the Japanese manga ‘Parasyte’, under the title ‘Parasyte: The Grey’, about some aliens that arrive on Earth and need to parasitize human beings to survive. The script is in charge of Yeon and Ryu Yong-jae (‘The paper house: Korea’).
It has also been confirmed three actors who will lead the cast of the live action: Jeon So-nee (‘Writing your destiny’), as the protagonist who manages to prevent the alien that tries to parasitize her from reaching her brain and will have to learn to live with it; Koo Kyo-hwan (‘Kingdom’), who tracks down the Parasites in search of his missing sister; Y Lee Jung Hyun (‘Peninsula’), as the leader of “Team Grey”, a special force to combat parasites.
The series takes as its reference the manga ‘Parasyte’ (‘Kiseijuu’) by Hitoshi Iwaaki, successfully published in Afternoon magazine between 1989 and 1995 (in Spain it is published by Planeta Cómic). The comic has already been previously adapted to anime in 2014, under the title ‘Parasyte: The Maxim’, and had its own national live action in 2014 and 2015two films directed by Takashi Yamazaki.
The history mixes science fiction with philosophical questions, based on the relationship established between the main character and Migi, the alien that parasitizes his right hand. Observing the description of the characters, they already tell us that there will be modifications and new plots will be added to the original material, in addition to moving the action to Korea.
Although it is usual for live action manga to be made in Japan, it is not the first time that interest in making a Korean adaptation has arisen, with Park Chan-wook’s ‘Old Boy’ being the most famous example. We will have to wait to see the final result of this series, which will be distributed internationally by Netflix.
