After writing and producing the first two ‘Venom’ movies, Kelly Marcel is ready to jump into the director’s chair, as Deadline says that is set to direct the third installment of the saga for Marvel and Sony Picturesagain starring Tom Hardy, who produces alongside Marcel, this one writing the script on a story by Marcel and Hardy himself.
The third time lucky?
Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker are also producing ‘Venom 3’ of which the details of the plot are unknown, apart from the fact that Hardy will return as the lethal protector after the first two films grossed a combined $1.36 billion dollars worldwide at the box office. It’s also unknown who will be joining Hardy from previous films or if any characters from Sony Pictures or the MCU will be joining the film.
The first two films had their own director, with Ruben Fleischer directing the first and Andy Serkis directing the most recent, but Marcel has been there from the start as Venom’s tortuous journey was charted. Experts say that Hardy and Marcel have always been on the same page when it comes to shaping the story and going into what sounds like the final chapter, the two were in tune with the direction they wanted to take.
Hardy announced on his social media channels earlier this year that Marcel had returned to work on the script, and as the two developed the story, sources they say it became clear that it made sense for Marcel to also take on the management duties. Before becoming one of the architects of the ‘Venom’ universe, Marcel was known for helping launch the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ franchise by writing the first film in the series.
