At first glance, Hughie is a character who doesn’t fit well into Billy Butcher’s team of Super hunters in TheBoys. But a twist in the final issue of the comic series revealed why he kept Hughie on the team all this time. Something that could inevitably happen at the end of the series.
Throughout the comic series, the boys from TheBoys they work with the CIA to monitor Vought-American and the Supers. A team in which the role of each of them is clear. Mother’s milk, he is incredibly organized and methodical, as his family has been deeply affected by the effects of Compound V. Frenchie is super violent and paired with Kimiko, the pair are incredibly effective killers. Meanwhile, Butcher isn’t afraid to do just about anything, from intimidation to torture, to get at Homelander, who was responsible for killing his wife.
However, Hughie does not have any kind of special abilities or violent tendencies, as he is often the butt of the team’s jokes. But Butcher recruited him for one reason in particular after A-Train killed his girlfriend in a bloody accident.
In The Boys No. 2 Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, Tony Avina, and Greg Thompson, Billy Butcher reveals to Hughie that he is bringing the TheBoys and wants you to join. His reason for recruiting Hughie is that he’s seen what Supes and Sevens are capable of, and after his girlfriend was killed, he wasn’t looking for compensation. For Butcher, Hughie’s search for justice (and not money) made him feel empathy, since he did not only care about himself.
However, later we find out the real reason.
However, in number 72 of the collection, the circle is closed at the end of the original comic. In a twist, a dying Butcher reveals that he recruited Hughie because he wanted to give someone compassionate a chance to keep him from losing control on his mission to kill all Supes linked to Compound V.
Butcher admits that seeing Hughie not worry about money and being a good person made it the perfect foil for his breaking point. Hughie’s empathetic nature was not an asset to the team. TheBoys. But it was important to Butcher’s wish that someone would stop him when he finally went too far. That eventually came to pass when Butcher turned on his own team as he went completely off the rails, prompting Hughie to stab him and eliminate him for good. Butcher couldn’t help but feel proud that the “nice guy who can’t help but be reasonable” have stopped it.
It seems inevitable that the television series TheBoys end with a similar reveal and a final confrontation between the two characters. Butcher’s spin on Hughie in TheBoys. Because he wanted someone good to stop him if he crossed a line he couldn’t come back from. It’s too good not to be used in the live-action series. Hughie may be weak and not as prolific at killing Supes as his teammates. But in the end, against all odds, he was the perfect person to stop Billy Butcher in his tracks. TheBoys.
