Despite the fact that many began to identify his face thanks to his fantastic work as a protagonist in ‘The Squid Game’ —which helped him scratch an Emmy nomination—, Lee Jung-jae’s career dates back much further than the release of the Netflix phenomenon; having participated in productions of the stature of ‘Gwansang’, ‘New World’, ‘El gran coup’ or the popular series ‘Teuripeul’.
Much more than squid
However, one of his most celebrated roles is that of ruthless killer covered in tattoos and named Ray the one who gave life in the electrifying ‘Libéranos del mal’; a South Korean house brand action thriller directed by Hong Won-chan —screenwriter of the magnificent ‘The Chaser’ and ‘The Yellow Sea’—.
Well, the box office success of the feature film, which was released in theaters in South Korea during a break in restrictions due to the pandemic attracting 4.36 million viewers to theaters, has led to in a spin-off in the form of a series entitled ‘Ray’ in which Lee will once again unleash his talent and magnetism on screen.
But beware, because the show, which will explore the origins of its main character, does not find its only claim in the interpreter from Seoul, with a dazzling technical and creative team. It begins with the directorial duo made up of the Hong Won-chan and Shin Woo-seokand is completed with screenwriter Kim Bo-tong —’D.P’— and director of photography Hong Kyung-pyomresponsible for feature films such as ‘Parasites’, ‘Burning’ or ‘The Stranger’.
The pre-production of ‘Ray’ will begin next 2023 and there are no distribution plans for it yet, so it will be time to arm yourself with patience. Of course, it will be rare that we do not find ourselves before a new example of the audiovisual power of the Asian country.
