It was a bit strange that we had been so long without news of the reboot of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, a classic television story that promised to return with something totally new. The silence has been broken with what many of us feared: the project has been paused indefinitely.

The return of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ has been on the table since 2018when the intention was announced to resurrect the universe created by Joss Whedon from the hand of new characters. It would have Gail Berman as executive producer (it was already in the original series and ‘Angel’), as well as Whedon himself, Fran Kazui, Kaz Kazui and Joe Earley.
Well, Berman confirmed on The Hollywood Reporter podcast that the project is paused and things are not looking good taking into account the little activity observed in this project since it was announced four years ago.
As far as we know, the reboot intended to start from scratch with a new protagonist: Monica Owusu-Breen (‘Midnight, Texas’), who remarked his admiration for the original series and his will not to replace it but to seek his own and different identity. the reboot would be based more on the original mythology and would use an approach similar to that of the 1997 series to tell a “more contemporary” story.
Since then, no other relevant information about him has been disclosed, nor how the production phase was progressing, nor what media were interested in his acquisition, nor more additions to the cast (although it was known that Sarah Michelle Gellar would not be involved)… not even for the show’s 25th anniversary, which falls this year.
‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ is one of those small television miracles that triumphed against all odds, after a regular first attempt in the form of a movie. The Serie remained on the air for 7 seasons and gave rise to the spin-off of ‘Ángel’, which lasted 5 seasons.
At the moment, the reboot is on ‘stand-by’ and it doesn’t seem at all clear that it will change its situation for the better, at least not in the near future. In Spain, ‘Buffy, Vampire Slayer’ is available on Disney +.
