No one doubts that ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ is one of the great series on the air. Amazon has invested a lot of money in it and it is clear that the enormous success of its first two episodes has to go even further to compensate for all the spending on it. One very striking thing about it is a minimalist openingfar removed, for example, from ‘The house of the dragon’.
A mystery to solve
It is evident that the header of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ has a meaning, which has led many fans to carry out different theories about what each of the images that appears in the same means. There is some consensus that they represent different key aspects of Middle-earth, but at the moment no one can give an undisputed interpretation.
In fact, Anthony Vitaglianoone of the artists behind the creation of that opening, wanted to make it clear that “there are quite a few things hidden in the opening that will make more sense as the season progressesalso reminding us the curious technique used to execute what we see on the screen and that is detailed in Plains of Yonder:
Cymatics is a natural phenomenon that makes sound visible to the eye. The vibrations of fine particles on a flat surface show amazing symmetrical patterns that reflect audio frequencies. Physicists and mathematicians understand cymatics, but for us mere mortals, it is magical.
The goal with all this was “portray a universe that is both primordial and timeless“and for that took as inspiration the Ainursome spiritual beings created by Tolkien that “they sing such beautiful music that the world is created from their sound“. In this way, they created images that “they conjure an ancient and invisible power, which fights to be seen. Symbols form, flow, push and disappear as quickly as they came“.
It is to be hoped that later we will receive a more detailed explanation about what they wanted to convey with each of the images, but for now we will have to settle for the promise of a Behind the Scenes that we will be able to see soon.
