The arrival of a new month brings plenty of news to Netflix. Some are original productions, but there are also juicy catalog titles that hadn’t been available for streaming for a while. A very prominent one that arrives on the platform today, October 1, is ‘Identity’Probably the most underrated movie james mangoldalso director of ‘Logan’.
The other Ten Negritos
‘Identidad’ is a kind of modern rereading of ‘Diez Negritos’, the classic by Christie Agatha that has already been brought to the big screen on several occasions. This time ten strangers are forced to take refuge in a motel in the middle of nowhere, but things get even more complicated when it becomes clear that one of them has to be a murderer.
With that premise, the screenwriter michael cooney builds a story that prioritizes thriller over terror, also leaving enough space for us to meet the characters and understand their motivations. In addition, it uses a peculiar structure to give ‘Identity’ a different energy, something that Mangold knows how to take advantage of very well to always maintain a climate of intrigue in which not everything depends on simply solving the mystery around the corpses that accumulate.
It helps to have a first class cast with many faces known to the public as John Cusack, Ray Liotta or Amanda Peet. None of them a great star, but all very competent whenever they wanted to, which was key to giving extra solidity to a film called to surprise the viewer, although later it will depend on each one how to take it. There will be those who see it as something brilliant, while others will not tire of using the term cheater.
For my part, I tend more towards the positive in that aspect, but on top of that it is a very entertaining film that knows how to dose suspense very wellhas an effective setting work with which it is impossible not to remember at some point ‘Psychosis’, a film with which it also shares some other point in common.
