Have you heard about the legend of the Loch Ness monster? Sure, much has been speculated, but does this monster really exist living in Loch Ness in Scotland?

The world is full of mysterious stories and legends. It is enough to remember the myths of Bigfoot, the feared Silbón or even fantastic creations of the human mind, such as the terrifying Frankenstein. As we can see, the imaginary and popular culture open wide spaces for strange, unknown and frightening creatures.

today in supercurious We wanted to travel to Scottish lands, to bring you what is perhaps the most popular and internationalized myth in the country: the legend of the Loch Ness monster, that mysterious creature that lives in the depths of the water and whose extravagant description has been inherited, along with fear, from generation to generation. Below we will tell you if the Loch Ness monster exists and everything related to this peculiar legend. Can you come with us?

What is the legend of the Loch Ness monster?

The legend of the Loch Ness monster is so old that it has managed to span entire millennia. The first references around this mysterious creature are between the years 565 and 591. It was Saint Columba who left behind a peculiar encounter with an immense being that came out of the lake, an aquatic creature that, for some reason, had tried to attack a man who was lurking nearby.. This fact was collected in biographies that tell the life of this Gaelic missionary monk who reintroduced Christianity to Scotland during the Middle Ages.

Since then the apparent “encounters” with the monster have been common. Already In 1930, the Inverness Courier newspaper reported for the first time that a very large fish -or another being- had appeared in the waters of Loch Ness. It was the decade in which the so-called Nessie reached the peak of its popularity. That publication would be the initial impulse with which the hypothesis that the Loch Ness monster exists would become widespread. The London newspapers were quick to pick up the news, immediately dispatching photographers and reporters to Scotland. A daring circus even ventured to offer a reward of twenty thousand pounds to anyone who managed to capture the monster. It was achieved? Absolutely!

The origin of Nessie… A dinosaur?

The legend of the Loch Ness monster has not remained only in popular myths and stories. There are many curious people who have decided to investigate what could be the origin of this rare creature. One of the most widespread theories is that it could be an apparently extinct species. Nothing more and nothing less than a Plesosaur. From the descriptions of the witnesses, who are experts in cryptozoology, the monster is defined as an aquatic being, a being from the Mesozoic era of large dimensions and a long neck. The fins are undoubtedly the most characteristic of the animal and one of the clues to classify it in this species. Some fins that would serve to propel the water. But could it be? Scientists remind us that it is not feasible.

It is known that Plesosaurs needed to surface to breathe, something that would undoubtedly have led to continued sightings of the creature. Another fact not to accept the hypothesis that the Loch Ness monster exists is that this body of water, despite being deep and extensive, originated after a recent geological glaciation. This implies the fact that it was in a solid and frozen state during the ice age. It is therefore impossible that a family of these aquatic dinosaurs could remain alive there until today, reproducing normally, in an environment with very little biomass to feed on. For those who are more lovers of mythology, the legend of the Loch Ness monster refers to the presence of a Kelpie, a huge and rare creature with a shape similar to that of a horse.

Nessie’s first photograph, true or false?

As we told you, the legend of the Loch Ness monster began to become massively popular in the 1930s. It was in 1934 when the first photograph was published, which supposedly corroborated the hypothesis that the Loch Ness monster exists. The image was published in the Daily Mail. Its authorship was attributed to the surgeon RK Wilson, and since then it has been taken as conclusive proof that the depths of the lake were indeed the home of the fearsome creature. It wasn’t until six decades later that the image was revealed to be a fake. It had been nothing more than a set-up with a toy submarine and a clay figure attached to it.

Does the Loch Ness monster exist? Was seen?

    Lake Ness

Just as many false tests have been discovered, there are also others whose veracity is still in doubt. It is on them that the argument of those who believe in the existence of the creature is centered. A sighting of the Loch Ness monster was reportedly recently made. Apparently it was an image captured by the Apple Maps satellite, that revolutionized the community of scientists and curious people, launching new ideas about the mysterious creature.

The Appleinsider, the device that captured the image, was taking a look around the idyllic city of Inverness in Scotland, when it stood just above the famous lake. What his visor picked up was a white silhouette of a large creature. Something huge swimming under the depths of the lake. The new and sophisticated technologies have once again revived his figure, the figure of that supposed Plesiosaur that has given this Scottish corner so much fame. “It looks like the wake of a ship, but the ship is not there,” Gary Campbell, president of the Official Loch Ness Monster, told the Daily Mail. “Whatever it is, it is underwater and heading south. Unless there are secret submarines crossing the loch, the size of the object makes it possible to talk about the Loch Ness monster,” says Campbell.

The curious thing about this image is that it is not the only one that exists. Last year there were also a couple of tourists who sent very similar photos to the Daily Mail, shocked by what they have just seen and believing that they are in front of the true legend of the Loch Ness monster. Now it seems that the technology of the Apple house has come to refute that what was collected by those tourists was not a “fake”, or a setup with which to fuel the business of the Loch Ness Monster. Whatever it was…it was just there. The truth is that at no time have the sightings or photographs collected around Lake Inverness, in Scotland, been confirmed. Scientists cannot admit -at the moment- the existence of a large creature inside this deep freshwater setting.

Then What do these continuously appearing photographs capture? What did the Apple satellite pick up? We don’t know yet. Legends are often nourished by dreams, and we all love to theorize about facts that we don’t quite understand. But whatever it is, its disturbing trail continues to amaze us and fill us with doubts. And you do you think? Do you think the Loch Ness Monster exists? Or is it just a fruit of the collective imagination? Feel free to leave us your comment. We will be looking forward to reading you!
