In 2013 James Gunn joined the ranks of Marvel Studios to prepare the Guardians of the Galaxy saga, a story that the filmmaker contemplated in a trilogy, which had the story of all the characters planned.
However, in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor reiterates the existence of the Infinity Stones, the object of Thanos’ desire to “bring balance to the universe” by exterminating half of life.
The addition of the Infinity Stones to the MCU defined the direction of the second and third phase, but this was not part of the original plan of Marvel Studios when starting the MCU, according to what James Gunn mentions in a question and answer session. on his twitter account.
I didn’t know much when I pitched. And I didn’t know what was going to happen in IW & Endgame (Infinity Stones weren’t even a part of the MCU until AFTER my first draft of Vol 1). But once I was writing I knew the arcs of all the major characters except Gamora, which changed.

In 2020, Gunn himself revealed at a Guardians of the Galaxy Watch Party that Thanos’s cameo and the explanation of the origin of the Infinity Stones by the Collector, played by Benicio del Toro.
The ONLY thing Marvel asked me to include was a Thanos cameo and said maybe I could create an origin for the Infinity Stones. Other than that they were up for whatever and weren’t set on any one way to handle the characters. #QuarantineWatchParty #GotG https://t.co/zZtcXF2ftw

Despite the fact that Marvel Studios confirmed the end of the Gems, the brothers Joe and Anthony Russo have indicated that these minerals would still be present in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Thanos only reduced the stones to the atomic level. Stones are still present in the universe”the filmmakers mentioned in the month of May 2019, within the framework of the premiere of Avengers: Endgame in theaters.
