It’s been a few days since he came to Netflix ‘Daggers in the Back: The Mystery of the Glass Onion’, the long-awaited second adventure of Daniel Craig giving life to detective Benoit Blanc. The film is full of winks and references, but there is one to the best film in all of Tom Cruise’s filmography that has been overlooked by many viewers. I mean ‘Magnolia’.
It was also a surprise for the director of the film
The wink in question happens at minute 80 of the film during a flashback that explains a little about the past of some of the protagonists. It is then that we see Miles, the character played by Edward Nortonwith exactly the same look used by Cruise in the sensational film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson in 1999.
rian johnsonhead of ‘Punches in the back: The Mystery of the Glass Onion’, has confessed that Norton caught him by surprise when he appeared characterized in such a way on the set of filming, commenting the following on the matter in Insider:
He and Jenny Eagan, our costume designer, came up with the look and I had no idea. I cracked up. But then I thought, “Is this too much?” I also thought: “What will Paul think of this?” I hope he takes it in a good mood.
Norton’s explanation
Furthermore, his own Norton spoke on this issue during the discussion after the preview of the film that took place on October 19 in Madrid, pointing out the following -note that there is no direct spoiler but perhaps it is better to read it only if you have already seen ‘The Mystery of Glass Onion’- about Why did you decide to make this unexpected decision:
Now that you’ve seen the movie, I think it’s safe to say that Miles Bron has never had an original idea in his entire life.
Come on, his character must have felt identified in some way with Frank TJ Mackey, Cruise’s character in ‘Magnolia’, and he limited himself to copying his appearance because why try to have your own personality.
