There is hardly a month left for the premiere of the third season of ‘Mob Psycho 100’ after three years since the last batch of chapters ended and we will be able to see it through Crunchyroll. The anime-specialized platform has begun to catch up this year with Spanish dubs, although in some territories they even have the option of seeing the dubbed chapter the same day it comes out in Japan.
In general, the system works wonderfully in the United States, but when unions and labor rights come into play, negotiations with the actors do not always come to fruition.
Failed trades and recasts
It is always rare when they suddenly change a voice actor from one season to another, and there is already controversy with ‘Mob Psycho 100’ because its protagonist will be replaced in the new chapters.
Kyle McCarley, who lent his voice to Mob in the first two seasons of the anime in the United States, has announced that he will not return for the third due to problems with Crunchyroll. Apparently the clash between the actor and the platform has come because he is part of the dubbing union SAG-AFTRA and the SAG-AFTRA Dubbing Steering Committee and has wanted to negotiate their working conditions according to the association.
As McKCarley explained, wanted to meet with Crunchyroll to discuss ‘Mob Psycho 100’ and other future projects with union oversightbut Crunchyroll was not very for the work and has ended up replacing him.
“I thought it was weird that they were waiting so long to ask me, since the season was announced in January, I think?” the actor explained. “And the Funimation part of the company, before the merger, had already replaced me on ‘Scarlet Nexus’ last year when I refused to work on a non-union project.”
For its part, the platform has confirmed to Kotaku that Mob will not be the only character to go through a recast and that they will have to change several members of the cast and production. According to Crunchyroll, the change of voices has nothing to do with the unions, but rather that the series from now on will be dubbed again from their own studios in Dallas, Texas.
