The celebration of the event D23 of this 2022 has brought under its arm a good number of announcements and novelties that, during its first day, have been focused on brand productions Pixar and Disney and, in the case of the latter, it was to be expected that several of them were related to some live-action remakes of animated classics that continue to be a firm bet for The House of the Mouse.
Under the maaaar, under the maaaaaar…
One of the most anticipated —and, how could it be otherwise in these times, controversial— is the reimagining live action from ‘The Little Mermaid’. A project that began to take shape in 2016 and that three years after having found his protagonist in Halle Bailey, he has just presented himself at the gallery with a first and brief teaser.
In advance we can see Bailey dressed as Arielwho has thus expressed his enthusiasm for the project.
“I’m sure everyone here can relate to Ariel and how special she is to all of us. As a little girl swimming in the pool, imagining she was a mermaid, I never imagined that could come true. The three days of filming ‘Part of Your World’ was the most beautiful experience of my entire life, feeling everything that he feels, his passion, his restlessness, everything that he’s experiencing. It was very exciting to play those emotions and to have Rob directing me.”
On the other hand, Rob Marshall —’Chicago’, ‘Mary Poppins Returns’—, director of the feature film, has commented that his participation in the film was a matter of destiny.
“I have a special connection to this movie. In 1989, I don’t know if you remember the thrill of hearing a musical again. It was dead, musicals were gone. Even though it was animated, we could hear people singing over and over again. When Disney He asked me to shoot this, I felt something incredible. It seemed like fate.”
‘The Little Mermaid’, written in four hands by Jane Goldman —’Kick Ass’— and David Magee —’La vida de Pi’— and whose cast includes names such as Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Awkwafina, Jonah Hauer-King or Daveed Diggs, is scheduled to be released in Spanish cinemas next May 26, 2023.
