The race to oscars 2023 has started. The Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain has already chosen its three candidates to represent Spain in the award ceremony with the most notoriety at an international level. ‘Alcarràs’, ‘Five Little Wolves’ and ‘As Bestas’.
Three jewels in discord
Like every year, the usual procedure is followed by which each country presents its film candidate for the Oscars in order to opt for the award for Best Foreign Language Film. For this year’s edition, ‘El Buen Patron’ was presented and was ultimately not selected, although Penélope Cruz was nominated for her role in ‘Madres Paralelas’ and Alberto Mielgo won the award for Best Animated Short Film .
For the Oscars 2023, have been announced three promising candidates: ‘Alcarràs’, ‘Five Little Wolves’ and ‘As Bestas’. The actress María Pedraza (‘The paper house’) has been in charge of announcing these three films, of which only one will be eligible for the coveted award.
‘Alcarràs’ is the second highest grossing Spanish film of 2022 (below ‘Padre no hay más que uno 3’). Second feature film Carla Simon (which also chose to represent Spain with ‘Summer 1993’), the film about a Catalan family of farmers achieved win the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festivalgarnered rave reviews and was one of the most viewed during La Fiesta del Cine.
‘Cinco Lobitos’ could also be seen at the Berlinale and triumphed at the Malaga Festival with the award for Best Screenplay and Best Actress shared by Laia Costa and Susi Sánchez. The First film by Alauda Ruiz de Azúaabout the difficulties of a new mother to face motherhood, is in the 12th position of the highest grossing Spanish films of 2022.
‘As Bestas’ is the new film by Rodrigo Sorogoyen (‘Anti-riot’) and it is a thriller about a French couple who settles in Galicia and the coexistence conflicts that begin to arise with the locals. The movie will premiere on November 11 this year but has already been seen at the Cannes Film Festival.
The election will be difficult, since the three are very powerful candidates. The September 13 will confirm which one will be chosen to represent Spain at the 2023 Oscars, which will be held on March 12 in Los Angeles.
