Last September was a huge blow for Spanish movie theaters. After two years of pandemic restrictions and the consequent sharp decline in box office receipts, the ninth month of 2022 marked the first negative evolution compared to the same period of 2021 with losses of 12.26% translated into one million viewers and about three million euros less.
Unfortunately, the data for October have not been more encouraging, once again showing a decrease of 6.07% compared to the same month of the previous year caused, in part, by the celebration of the Film Festival. During its 31 days, the rooms brought together a total of 5.49 million viewers that generated an amount of 32.6 million euros; If we take into account that in October 2021 the attendance was 5.42 million viewers and 34.7 million euros were generated, the imbalance due to the promotion is more than evident.
‘Black Adam’ saves the furniture
Nothing like taking a look at the highest grossing movies of the month to get an idea of the delicate situation that a box office is going through that was led by the surprising launch of ‘Smile’; the horror film debuted on September 30 and closed the year with the not inconsiderable amount of 4.7 million euros in their pockets.
Things get more murky when we look at the fact that the second classified was ‘Black Adam’, which arrived almost on the horn on the 21st to raise a total of 4.1 million euros in the ten days that it was on the bill and that it was technically tied with ‘The crooked lines of God’ despite the two-week lead that Oriol Paulo’s feature film had over the DC title.
Closing the Top 5 we came across the revival of ‘Avatar’, which added €2.29 million throughout the month, and with ‘Tadeo Jones 3: The Emerald Tablet’ which premiered on August 28 and which continued to show its authority with other €2 million which already make a total of 10.8 million.
As expected, most of the market share, specifically 27.92% went to Warner Bros. thanks, in large part, to ‘Black Adam’ —although it had 19 titles in projection—. To this, she followed very closely paramount, whose ‘Smile’ allowed him to get 23.4 of the pie. In third position and with almost half, waltdisney closed October with a 12.6% market share benefited mainly by the re-release of ‘Avatar’.
