For the production, he rebuilt the home he had in his childhood and adolescence and shot in states such as Arizona, California and New Jersey.
The filmmaker’s mother used to ask him when they would do a story about them, he told the 60 Minutes program, so for him it is more than a gift and not a criticism of his family.
Likewise, Steven called his film “cathartic“: “Well, it was cathartic for me, certainly. I never took it for granted. I mean, it’s a tremendous privilege, it’s like making a movie, you know, and realizing with this movie, what did I just do? Was it $40 million worth of therapy?”
He also stated that his mother is “the heart of the story” and she was the one who motivated him to give more and more of himself since his childhood, so it became an inspiration for him.
