Not long ago we were talking about the fact that American remakes of anime are becoming more and more common, and look where this week the hare has jumped with another.
‘Paprika’ is the latest film by Satoshi Konand it seems that to retell the story that it tells us, a series for Amazon is already underway in Hollywood with the help of Cathy Yan.
American remake, although based on the original source
The story of ‘Paprika‘ originally emerged as a novel by the Japanese author Yasutaka Tsutsuialthough it became popular internationally thanks to Satoshi Kon’s anime film. The film also marked the last title in Kon’s filmography before her death, and is considered one of the gems of Japanese cinema.
With these big shoes, and even if Yan eventually adapts the original novel and not Kon’s movie, it’s going to be hard to avoid comparisons. As reported by Deadline, the director will also serve as executive producer for Amazon Studios and Hivemind.
The director is best known for directing ‘Birds of Prey’ for DC, but recently earned an Emmy nomination for her work on ‘Succession’, for which she has shown that she can move in various registers and could be perfectly adapted to a story like ‘Paprika’.
‘Paprika’ is a psychological thriller that presents us with a near future where there is technology that allows access to people’s dreams, and even gives them nightmares. When a terrorist starts attacking different targets, the psychologist Atsuko Chiba begins to investigate these crimes from the world of dreams.
