This Wednesday, November 5, the fifth season of ‘The Crown’ premieres, the Netflix series that has become one of the most successful projects of the streaming company.
During these new episodes we will be able to see Elizabeth Debicki recreating one of the most iconic moments of Princess Diana before the public opinion.
It is about the appearance of the Princess of Wales at the summer party at the Serpentine Gallery in London, in 1994, with the famous “revenge dress”.
Why do they call it the ‘revenge dress’?
Which was baptized that way because Lady Di wore it the same night that then Prince Charles publicly confessed that he had an extramarital affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles in the documentary ‘Charles: The Private Man, The Public Role’.
In addition, both the outfit and the color of the nails that he wore that day, a bright red, broke all the rules of the dress protocol of the British royal family.
The details of the well-known piece
The dress was made in chiffon by Greek designer Christina Stambolian, it had a plunging sweetheart neckline, bare shoulders and a long black train.
She complemented the look with Manolo Blahnik silk heels, transparent black stockings and a pearl necklace with a huge sapphire in the center.
I would not attend the event
The late Vogue editor Anna Harvey, who worked as Diana’s stylist for many years, told the publication: “She wanted to look amazing, and she did.”
British journalist Tina Brown assured that Diana had initially rejected the invitation to the party that night, until she found out that the documentary of the Prince of Wales would be broadcast that day.
“I had turned down the invitation until two days before the event, until word of the adultery date started trickling into promos for the broadcast,” Brown wrote in The Diana Chronicles. “It was then that one of the organizers of the gala, an old friend of Diana’s family, received a surprise phone call: She expressed that she wanted to go after all. I asked him: ‘What do you want?’ And she replied: ‘You’ll see’”.
The next day, Diana’s fashion choice dominated the covers, rather than coverage of her husband’s documentary, thrusting her back into the spotlight.
One before and one after
The Stambolian dress chosen by Diana marked a transformation in her way of dressing. From that day on, Lady Di’s outfits abandoned the characteristic classic and preppy style, which gave her a childish look marked by bobo necks, ruffles and prints, adopting a more distinguished style.
Camilla Parker imitation
Camilla Parker and Carlos were married in 2005 and since then the now queen consort of England has recreated the style of Lady Di on several occasions.
Among them is the ‘revenge dress’, which she wore the night she arrived at the Ritz hotel in London with a dress that, although it was long, was also black, with the same cut, bare shoulders and a pearl necklace.
