She had a great school called work, and for as long as I can remember, she managed so that my brothers and I did not lack for anything while we became independent people who were not at the expense of “someone” doing things for us. Together with my father, she built a heritage and both gave us the education and values that made us who we are today.
Having said the above, I am fully aware that I write these lines from a perspective of privilege, since I had the enormous fortune of growing up in a family that never established a ‘gender struggle’, much less degradation towards women. In addition, over the years I have had the opportunity to forge a career and achieve a certain public recognition that I am grateful for and that, at the same time, forces me to be extremely responsible with what I say, but especially with what I do. Today, being a woman represents a titanic task that goes beyond a hackneyed phrase.
The reality indicates that we assume multiple facets that we are obliged to exercise practically to perfection and it is not a secret that in 2023 there is no “level floor” neither in Mexico nor in much of the world. We do not have the same opportunities as men. In this context, from a trench like mine, as small as it is infinite, I try to generate an impact and a real change in society in relation to all those women who today are blurred or who simply do not have the spaces or forums to develop and be heard.
I am a daughter, sister, mother, wife and professional, among other facets, which is why I give myself with empathy to the needs of the people who surround me and who are part of my world. I am convinced that together we can build, tear down stereotypes and achieve that equality for which so much has been fought. As a mother, I offer the same game alternatives to Patricio and Amelia, because that is where they experience their first approach to learning.
I accompany them so that they understand that men and women must walk shoulder to shoulder, and not one trampling the other. As a friend, I validate, support and take care of the fate of my sisters by choice. And as a communication professional, I try to show a more real and close conversation alternative, leaving aside the old and lamentable patterns of sexualized women.
We live in a country where more than ten women are killed every day and only a small percentage of cases are investigated as femicide. However, we have reached the point of “normalizing” a terrible reality that we are all forced to change from the field in which we have to participate. It is said, and it is said well, that for a society to flourish, it is necessary to invest in women.
Doing so is “good business” and it is not just a slogan. It has been proven that in practically all areas, from professionals to family members, we grant the best dividends. Investing in women will lead us to a more prosperous and inclusive society. I am convinced of this, but also that this need has never been as urgent as it is today. In conclusion, being a woman in 2023 is an enormous challenge and an infinite privilege. I am ready to continue exercising my responsibilities and actions so that they contribute to having a better country and, incidentally, to honor mom’s teachings.
