In 2017, James Cameron became involved in a controversy after criticizing the Wonder Woman movie, words that he later rectified, apologizing to Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins. “You know, life is about stumbling and people go backwards and we talk about it and things get better.”.
In an interview for Time magazine, James Cameron said that it would be interesting if Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the next Dark Knight movie in the DC Universe, has a female director.
“It took a female director to own a great action movie, even though Kathryn Bigelow had been doing it for a while… She would have turned down any superhero movie she was offered if it was a female lead. And I think that’s the healthiest perspective, personally. Why not have women directing male characters? Let a woman run Batman”
The controversy between James Cameron and Wonder Woman
After the premiere of Wonder Woman, in 2017, James Cameron was a strong critic about the role of the heroines like Diana Prince or even Captain Marvel, considering that the feature film directed by Patty Jenkins.
“For me, it’s a step backwards. Sarah Connor was not a beauty icon. She was strong, troubled, a horrible mother and she earned the audience’s respect for her guts.”, he declared in an interview weeks after the premiere of Wonder Woman.
More than five years away, and after smoking the peace pipe with his colleague, Patty Jenkins, James Cameron rectified his words, acknowledging that his statements were not the most intelligent at the time.
“I have no problem with Wonder Woman. I loved the movie… What escaped me at the time was that it’s okay if a woman wants to be beautiful and dress well not for the male gaze, but for her own gaze in the mirror, right? Maybe I missed that part at the time”.
