Just like skin, hair ages. Researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine (USA) discovered in 2021 that it varies by race and ethnicity. But what can we do to delay it? Miriam Quevedo, a pioneer in rejuvenating hair care, explains the causes and consequences of hair ageing.
As Yale pointed out in a study with Pantene in 2019, hair is very important in terms of sociological implications. Having beautiful hair raises self-esteem and although little is said about the effects of the passage of time on it, it is a reality. That’s why we it is key to know the symptoms to act in time.
“Hair also ages,” says the creator, and “the same factors that affect our skin’s aging affect our hair and scalp,” concludes Miriam Quevedo.
The international expert distinguishes four different types of hair oxidative stress according to epigenetics: natural or biological aging, chemical and mechanical aging, environmental aging and lifestyle aging.
For Miriam Quevedo “being exposed to two or more of these factors will cause a series of changes in the scalp that will accelerate aging and seasonal hair loss”, and insists on the importance “of not only protecting the hair, but also the scalp yes
we want to maintain a healthy mane”.
As he clarifies, age, genetic factors, hormonal imbalances and cellular self-fatigue are those natural factors that can affect. The use of thermal styling tools, the blow-dry and chemical treatments such as perms and straightening, together with colorations, would respond to the second group. Pollution and UV/UVA rays are to blame for aging external and lastly, physical and/or emotional stress and diet.
How to recognize the consequences of hair aging and treat them
We can distinguish between visible and non-visible signs. As the expert explains, the most recognizable among the visible ones would be the fall, dryness and breakage of the fiber and sensitivity on the scalp.
Its global anti-aging hair care philosophy is based on the concept “Hair Skinification”which consists in understanding that the beauty of the hair depends on the health of the scalp and that the latter is still an extension of our skin, and therefore we must treat it as such.
To carry it out, consider that there are four major care steps that must be part of a ritual anti aging: exfoliation, cleansing, hydration, sublimation and protection.
The scalp is his number one goal and his mission for years. For her, it is the key to showing off healthy and spectacular hair. Many of our hair concerns are not resolved in the fiber, but in the scalp; grease, fall, breakage, dull, dry hair… these are verifiable signs of capillary aging, “the wrinkles in our hair”. To treat the accumulation of toxins, impurities and residues, it recommends exfoliate once a week to release the root, improve the permeability of the scalp and stimulate the circulation of nutrients and oxygen to the follicle and fiber.
He then recommends the use of a treatment shampoo, followed by the hydration that the hair and scalp need. For daily hydration of slightly damaged hair and rebalancing the pH, a conditioner is a good option. As a cure or shock treatment, Miriam recommends a mask once a week. For more damaged hair, the mask can be used daily.
Finish off with serums, oils, lotions, liquid and leave-in conditioners, or styling products that seal the cuticle to prevent it from losing its internal moisture and damaging its natural keratin. Especially if you are going to use heat tools.
As extra shock treatments, the expert has a wonderful anti-aging cure to do at home, Bond Rejuvenatin Luxe Cure. Transform hair as if it were a professional treatment.
