Are you on vacation and do not have closed plans? Are you working in the middle of August and the heat is making your work unbearable? Don’t worry, because the seventh art comes to the rescue —and if it’s in the movies, even better— with a small selection of theatrical releases that, on this occasion, are brought forward one day, you will know why. And watch out, because this week they bring under their arms one of the most anticipated titles of 2022!
The premieres of August 19, 2022
‘Nope’ (‘Nope’, 2022)
- It’s the new movie from Jordan Peele, director of the fantastic — albeit controversial and divisive — ‘Let Me Out’ and ‘Us’.
- It is the first horror feature film shot in IMAX, and is photographed by the always successful Hoyte Van Hoytema, Christopher Nolan’s main DOP in titles such as ‘Tenet’, ‘Dunkirk’ or ‘Interstellar’.
- ‘Nope’ features a mo-cap chimpanzee played by Terry Notary. This isn’t the first time Notary has played a primate, as he brought Rocket to life in the latest ‘Planet of the Apes’ trilogy.
- His cast includes names like Daniel Kaluuya —who already collaborated with Peele on ‘Let Me Out’—, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun and Michael Wincott.
- As usual in the director’s work, one can expect a good number of symbolisms, more or less veiled sociopolitical and racial discourses and a tone that, despite everything, does not take itself too seriously.
Criticism in Espinof: ‘NOP!’ by Jordan Peele could have been the best horror movie of the year but it only remains an extravagant curiosity | by Jorge Loser
‘My God, but what have you done to us?’ (‘Qu’est-ce qu’on a tous fait au Bon Dieu?’, 2022)
- After ‘My God, but what have we done to you?’ and ‘My God, but what have we done to you… now?’, Philippe de Chauveron goes back behind the cameras to… close? the trilogy.
- The original film was a resounding success at the French box office, grossing over $104 million from 12 million admissions. Since ‘Untouchable’ such figures have not been reached.
- This third part once again features Christian Clavier, Chantal Lauby and Ary Abittan in front of the cameras, among others.
- Regarding the script, Philippe de Chauveron and Guy Laurent are the signatories again, so a good dose of continuity in tone and sense of humor can be expected.
‘Everyone hates Johan’ (‘Alle hater Johan’, 2022)
- It is the debut feature by Hallvar Witzø, who signed the Oscar-nominated short film ‘Tuba Atlantic’ in 2010.
- It stars Pål Sverre Hagen and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, among others.
- His proposal of comedy in a Nordic key promises an experience, to say the least, unusual.
‘A friend in New York’ (‘A partner in New York’, 2022)
- Directed by Harold Trompetero, director born in Bogotá and responsible for titles such as ‘Díastole y sistole’, ‘Violeta de mil colores’ or ‘Riverside’.
- It offers us a proposal in the key of comedy with immigration as a backdrop starring Carlos Hurtado and Judith Pérez Segura.
