We continue with this week’s trend of expanding television universes (‘Dexter’, ‘Billions’, ‘Bosch’…) and this time we have a return that could even be considered unexpected. ‘Spartacus’, the violent and bloody series of gladiators that we enjoyed a decade ago, is preparing its return.
A return in the form of a sequel, which will be created and written by Steven S. DeKnight (showrunner of ‘Daredevil’), who already created the original series with Sam Raimi as producer. Without a defined number of chapters, this new installment of the adventures of the gladiators is produced by Starz and Lionsgate. In other words, who knows how we will see it in Spain.
return to the arena
This sequel will explore what has become of the characters after the end of ‘Spartacus: War of the Damned’, Season 3, which ended after the bitter defeat of Spartacus after an epic battle against the forces of Crassus. The new series will tell a story of betrayal, deception and blood under the shadow of Rome. In DeKnight’s words:
“It is quite an incredible honor to be invited back into the world of Spartacus and to be found with this unbridled creative support from my colleagues at Starz and Lionsgate. Together we are shaping something truly unique and unusual for the next chapter of this epic story.”
Released in 2010, ‘Spartacus’ soon became a hit title thanks to its attractive bet of blood, sex and violence. Although its visual effects left something to be desired (at least in its first season), it was well received. So much so that it had three seasons (Blood and Sand, Revenge and War of the Damned) and a miniseries (Gods of the Sand).
A series that also had to deal with the death of Andy Whitfield, its protagonist, who died in 2011 after being diagnosed with lymphoma. Liam McIntyre He was the one who replaced him as Spartacus. In addition, in the cast we find John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah, Manu Bennett, Lesley-Ann Brandt, and Katrina Law.
