As time progresses, society has tried to move towards a more inclusive environment, creating laws and reforms that help reduce discrimination and make everyone feel comfortable and treated with respect. An example of this are the laws in favor of sexual diversity that have been proclaimed in several European countries, such as Ireland.
However, despite the constant change and evolution of generations, there are people who continue to refuse to abide by these new regulations, putting their own beliefs and interests first. Like the recent case of a teacher and priest who was fired from the high school where he worked for refusing to use neutral pronouns to address non-binary students, those who do not identify as male or female.
The religious teacher Enoch Burke claimed that his dismissal was absurd and unjustified, and just as he refused to use pronouns, he also refused to accept the school’s decision to dispense with his services, so after his dismissal, Burke continued showing up at the institution to “work”.
For obvious reasons, he was refused entry, so he had no right to be there. Repeatedly, he was asked to leave, but he just refused to do so. The school authorities said that his presence there was even causing fear in the students. In addition, according to students from the LGBTQI + community, he reminded them of the prejudices to which they had been exposed.
Even so, for three days in a row, the teacher kept showing up and refused to leave the place, so the director of the Wilson Hospital School decided to call the police and ask them to take him away, since he did not have the right to if they are there and are not part of the institution, their presence could be considered trespassing on private property.
The police took him away, but when he continued to refuse to leave the place, he was arrested for 100 days after failing to comply with a restraining order. Burke was released just before the Christmas holidays, but he was still completely unhappy about what had been done to him, as he argues that the reason for his dismissal is absurd and that his Christian faith instills in him that there are only two genders, female and male. male.
Professor Burke even had the support of people who demonstrated outside the prison to demand his release, since they share his ideology, but for the school, the well-being and safety of its students is more important, because if instead to feel comfortable, they felt discriminated against, they could not keep the teacher working there.
