Ladies, gentlemen, and non-binary people: Ari Aster is back. After making our hair stand on end with his magnificent approaches to terror ‘Hereditary’ and ‘Midsommar’, the New Yorker promised to change gears with his third feature film; a comedy? formerly known as ‘Disappointment Blvd.’ that will finally reach our screens under the title of ‘Beau is Afraid’ and you just submitted your first trailer.
winning combination
As you have been able to verify in the preview that you have on these lines, ‘Beau is Afraid’ promises to be a most peculiar bet and much more aligned than one would expect with the nightmarish look of the Aster house brand. In little more than two minutes, the film has totally sold us its cocktail of rarefied humor, magical realism and shades of what seems to be a veiled terror that make it one of the most exciting releases of 2023.
Described as “A portrait spanning decades of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time”the film finds its main attraction in its leading performer; a Joaquin Phoenix who perfectly masters this type of records and who will be accompanied by names like Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane, Michael Gandolfini or Kylie Rogers.
Of course, as far as I’m concerned, beyond casts and premises, if something is going to make me throw myself headlong into the cinema it is the new collaboration between its top manager and its head cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelskiwhose work in ‘Beau is Afraid’ bets to be one of the greats of the cinematographic course that has just begun.
In order to verify first hand that they are going to offer us, except for last minute changes, four hours that ‘Beau is Afraid’ is expected to last, in Spain we will have to wait for a date yet to be determined. Yes indeed, in the US they will be able to get their hands on him on April 21. Let’s hope it doesn’t become another one of those embarrassing cases in which a release reaches “alternative distribution channels” before it reaches movie theaters.
