The death of Masha Amini in Iran has triggered an unprecedented women’s revolution, under a clear symbol: cutting hair and burning scarves as a sign of protest against the Iranian regime. A gesture that has become international and has reached our country, with Spanish actresses cutting their locks and unleashing an ethical debate: It’s enough?
Each revolution has its slogan and that of Iran was not going to be less. Getting a haircut has become its official symbol that has crossed borders and reached Europe. We saw it a few days ago with French actresses in solidarity with Iran such as Jane Birkin, Isabelle Huppert, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Bérénice Bejo, Juliette Binoche or Marion Cotillard. Now it is the turn of Spain.
celebrities Homelands like Penélope Cruz, Amaia Salamanca, Maribel Verdú and many others have been recorded live cutting their hair in Iran. But what started with full strands has led to a review of tips that many twitter users they find ridiculous and a bit posturing. We open debate: is it useful or not useful at all?
In favor of this solidarity movement for the women of Iran
Of course, any gesture that puts the spotlight on injustice adds up and helps make visible the oppression that women are suffering under the current Iranian regime. The famous, with these videos, get the problem to reach more people and that we are increasingly looking for ways to help.
Could more be done? You are right
This poetic and symbolic gesture it could be accompanied by something more significant. Because the reality is that getting a haircut on TikTok is not going to matter to Iranian leaders. There are NGOs and organizations that work hard to spread the news from Iran, that support and help groups in danger and that need funds.
Getting a haircut is a good visual appeal, but no explained context or links so the rest of us can really help to make a difference will happen as with everything that is news: it will be forgotten. Here are two: Amnesty International to donate and Iran Human Rights to stay on top of things.
Twitter users are divided: posturing vs. applause
74 great artists cut a lock of their hair in solidarity with Iranian women. Bravas!

many Twitter users have applauded the action “for positioning themselves, for exposing themselves, for believing that women’s lives can be improved, for being artists like the top of a pine tree”, as says this user.
I count three hairs in that lock. And, like her, the majority. We complain about the clickbait of digital media, but what a shame for a society in which we sign up for anything for a few measly “likes” while there are people suffering. pic.twitter.com/RchhF0TvWK

Nevertheless, others see there clear posture. Especially in those that choose three poorly counted hairs so as not to spoil their hair in this act of solidarity. An example is the one that says this user: “cutting a lock of hair in a safe country supporting a cause that the whole world supports… doesn’t require exposing yourself or taking courage. I’m not saying it’s bad, but there’s no need to make a fuss as if you were in Saudi Arabia”
