This past Friday ‘Halloween: The End’ was released in theaters and it has cost very little to become number 1 at the box office in the United States. The problem is that the film directed by David GordonGreen Have you gone toAt the same time a great disappointment and an undisputed success regarding your income.
Contradictory but possible
To put it in figures, ‘Halloween: The End’ has added 41.2 million dollars during its first weekend at the North American box office. Taking into account that it only cost 30 and that the income from the rest of the world is missing, we could already speak of it as an economic success, Where does it come from then that it is a great disappointment?
There we have to go back to the figures, since ‘Halloween night’ debuted with 76.22 million dollars in 2018, while ‘Halloween Kills’ started with 49.4 last year. In addition, ‘Halloween: The End’ was expected to reach 55 million, partly because of the pull of being the last installment, but the result has been much lower than expected.
There one could argue that the public had lost interest or that the film is not very good, but the key factor is that in the United States it was released simultaneously in peacock. On that platform it has worked very well – it is the most watched movie in history there during its first two days available – but it is not clear that it will be a profitable move for Universal. For now, they have surely lost money from people who have stopped going to the movies and Peacock’s current offer that allows you to subscribe for a year for just $19.99 sows even more doubts.
It remains to be seen if Universal continues to repeat this tactic to try to boost its streaming platform, but the example of Warner with HBO Max makes it pretty clear that it doesn’t seem like a competitive move…
