Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel and his wife, model Miranda Kerr, gave 285 graduates of Los Angeles’ Otis College of Art and Design the ultimate graduation gift by paying all of their school fees.
The payment was made through a donation and in conjunction with The Spiegel Family Fund, a philanthropic organization dedicated to the arts, education, human rights and accommodation. However, Spiegel and Kerr’s contribution was reported to be the largest, totaling $10 million.
The students burst into tears and joy upon learning that their student debts had been paid in full. Now they will be able to continue with their life plan, get a job, travel and be the best in their branch.
Student debt weighs heavily on our graduates, who are highly diverse and talented. We hope this donation provides much-deserved relief and empowers them to pursue their aspirations and careers, repay this generosity, and become the next leaders in our community.
– Charles Hirschhorn, school president
The CEO of Snapchat mentioned that he spent time at Otis College, where he took summer courses just before entering Stanford.
It changed my life and made me feel at home. I felt pushed and challenged to grow up surrounded by super talented artists and designers, and we were all together.
– Evan Spiegel, Co-founder of Snapchat
It is worth mentioning that both Spiegel and Kerr received honorary degrees for their interest and contribution to the student community.
It is a privilege for our family to give back and support the Class of 2022, and we hope this gift will enable graduates to pursue their passions, contribute to the world and inspire humanity for years to come.
