One of my first memories at the controls of a console has as its protagonist the wonderful Mega Drive and the no less excellent beat ’em up ‘Streets of Rage’; a 16-bit “me vs. the neighborhood” cathedral designed by Noriyoshi Ohba and Hiroaki Chino which gave me countless hours of fun while mashing gang members controlling Adam, Axel and Blaze.
Me against the neighborhood… on the big screen
Knowing this, it is understandable that I was extremely happy —what nostalgia does— when I heard the news that Lionsgate has acquired the rights to adapt the legendary Sega video game by the hand of the screenwriter and creator of the ‘John Wick’ saga —and of that jewel that is ‘Nobody’— Derek Kolstad. Big words.
For greater peace of mind, we only have to read the words with which Kolstad has celebrated the announcement and which hint that He will take care of the project.
“When Dimitri first brought up the idea of making a ‘Streets of Rage’ movie, I immediately freaked out. What about working with Sega? My 10-year-old self is still smiling.”
For his part, Dimitri J Johnsonwhich will produce the feature film under the dj2 Entertainment label together with Toru Nakahara -producer of the two installments of ‘Sonic: The Movie’-, also has been described as a devotee of the saga who has been dreaming of this moment for a good part of his life.
“I’ve wanted to make a ‘Streets of Rage’ movie since I was 12 years old. This has progressed into a dream project with a dream team.”
For now, ‘Streets of Rage’ is still in a very early stage of development, so no information has been disclosed about its plot, cast or technical and artistic team —not to mention an approximate release date. The only thing left is to be patient while we let the hype train drag us along at full speed.
