This plot has certain similarities with stories of a utopian future in the style of Old Man Logan Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, where the hero has to return when chaos spreads in the streets.
At a press conference, Sylvester Stallone himself defines Samaritan as a warning tale for society that needs heroes when they have been removed in different ways.
“You say, ‘well, how do we get rid of all this violence and fear?’… And then in the movies, it’s always this mythical character. But in the end I tell people, ‘You have to take care of yourself’, that’s what it’s all about… Samaritan is kind of a cautionary tale, that when you get rid of your hero, you might need a hero back, because you’re just not ready. to take responsibility”
Samaritan is inspired by the main character from the title Astro City, published by the Wildstorm imprint, which is owned by DC Comics. Compared to other stories where retired heroes don’t have to worry about how to survive, Sam Cleary is dedicated to repairing appliances and separating garbage, to avoid being on the public radar.
“In this particular case, (Samaritan) had a problem that is so personal, that he couldn’t face the facts, and so he disappeared. He thought, okay, why don’t I take on what people considered more anonymous? work in the world, a dump. No one pays attention to these people. However, when you think about them, without them, we are in big trouble. So there’s all these metaphors in there”.
Young Sam Cleary suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor, Mr. Smith, is actually Samaritan, a legendary character who hides in plain sight. Twenty years ago, the city’s superpowered vigilante was declared dead after a warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis.
Officially, Samaritan perished in the fire, but some citizens like Sam are hopeful that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam sets out to win back Samaritan to save the city from ruin.
Samaritan features a cast led by Sylvester Stallone, Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton, Pilou Asbæk and Dascha Polanco.
Samaritan is now available on the Amazon Prime Video digital platform.
