AMC announces the return of Rick Grimes and Michonne to the Universe of the walking dead at San Diego Comic Con
We hadn’t heard from Rick Grimes for a long time. the walking dead, but thanks to Comic Con, we found out that he’s going to do it with Michonne. Four years after Andrew Lincoln confirmed his departure from the main series during the panel of the San Diego Comic-Con.
Now, AMC has announced that Andrew Lincoln will reprise the role of Rick Grimes opposite Danai Gurira as Michonne in a new series in 2023. The news was revealed at the series finale panel inside Hall H in San Diego, where the network revealed the full trailer for The Walking Dead: The Last Episodeswhich will end the main series of this post-apocalyptic universe.
The development of this spin-off comes almost four years after Scott Gimple, the director of content for The Walking Dead Universeannounced that Andrew Lincoln would star in a series of original films for AMC Studios that continue the Rick Grimes story. However, the network has finally decided to develop a mini series of six episodes.
The world needs Rick Grimes and Michonne
This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Separated by distance. For unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, based on a war against the dead… And, ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and know who they were in a place and situation unlike any they have ever known before? They are enemies? Lovers? victims? Winners? Without the other, are they alive, or will they discover that they, too, are the walking dead?

“This is a moment that The Walking Dead fans have been waiting for since Rick disappeared in the helicopter at the beginning of season nine. And for Michonne to go on a quest to find him in the next season.”said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment for AMC Studios. “What a great surprise for fans at this Comic-Con finale to the series that launched this universe and made television history. We couldn’t be more excited for a truly epic series finale later this year and to see Andy and Danai return in a new series they helped create, one of three new series coming in 2023 that continue the stories of so many iconic and favorite TWD characters“.
Gimple, who wrote the screenplay for the film trilogy of The Walking Dead with franchise creator Robert Kirkman, he will serve as showrunner on the Rick and Michonne spinoff, which is yet to be titled. Lincoln and Gurira will also serve as executive producers for the series.
“Rick and Michonne are two of my favorite people and Danai and Andy are two of my favorite people. Working with all of them is still a dream come true”Gimple said. “The three of us, along with a terrific all-star team from TWD and incredible new voices, are creating an epic of mad love that is worth the long, long wait.”

Lincoln added: “This has been the most extraordinary journey playing Rick Grimes for the better part of a decade. The friendships I’ve made along the way are deep and lasting, so it’s only fitting that I finally get to complete the story with Danai and Scott and the rest of the TWD family. I am so excited to return to the screen as Rick, reunite with Danai as Michonne, and bring fans an epic love story to add to the Walking Dead Universe.”
On the other hand Gurira said: “Michonne and this TWD family have meant a lot to me, and continuing the journey of these beloved characters, alongside Scott and Andy, both creatively and on camera, and bringing The Walking Dead fans something truly special is simply amazing. glorious. I can’t wait to pick up the katana again.”
In the last episode of Lincoln’s The Walking DeadMortally wounded, Rick disappeared when Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) carried him aboard a Civic Republic military helicopter. The Walking Dead: World Beyonda limited series co-created by Gimple, later confirmed that Jadis traded Rick to the Civic Republic in Pennsylvania, although Lincoln did not appear in the spinoff.

After a time jump, it’s already been over six years since Rick disappeared in the season 9 episode “What Comes After”. Rick was presumed dead after blowing up a bridge to save his family and friends from a horde of walkers, leaving Michonne and Daryl (Norman Reedus) unable to retrieve his body.
In Season 10, Gurira exited the series when Michonne set off to find Rick and bring him home to her children, Rick “RJ” Grimes Jr. (Antony Azor) and Judith Grimes (Cailey Fleming).
Other spin-offs of The Walking Dead in development at AMC Studios include Isle of the Dead, starring Lauren Cohan as Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan, and Daryl Dixon’s untitled solo spinoff series starring Reedus. Both series are scheduled to premiere in 2023.
