The enormous success of ‘Avatar’, the title that leads the top of the highest grossing films in history, did not bring a quick sequel. In fact, 13 years had to wait until the premiere of ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’, but it will be time to have much less patience to be able to see ‘Avatar 3’ and check what plans you have James Cameron for Pandora.
Next we will review everything that is known so far about ‘Avatar 3’a film whose shooting ended before the second installment even arrived, but the post-production work is so extensive that there is still a long way to go before it is in a position to hit theaters in 2024.
When is ‘Avatar 3’ released in theaters?
The December 20, 2024 It is the date chosen by Disney for the premiere of ‘Avatar 3’ in theaters. In principle it should not undergo changes, but the arrival of the third installment in theaters has already been delayed on several occasions, so it should not be ruled out that possibility.
The history
Watch out for ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ spoilers in the next paragraph.
No concrete details on the story have been given yet, but obviously it will have to pick up where it left off at the end of the second. With the Sullys still dealing with the loss of one of their own and that a war is going to be inevitable, while Quaritch has managed to escape Pandora with his life and it is clear that he will eventually return with a vengeance.
Cast and protagonists
The third installment of ‘Avatar 3’ will once again feature Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Dileep Rao, Giovanni Ribisi, Matt Gerald, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell and Jemaine Clement giving life to the characters they played in previous installments. In the case of Weaver it will be that of ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ and not that of ‘Avatar’, since they are different characters. Furthermore, it is to be expected that Kate Winslet also repeat, but it is not confirmed yet.
In addition, the signings of michelle yeoh (‘Everything at once everywhere’), Oona Chaplin (‘Game of Thrones’) and David Thewlis (‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’). It is to be hoped that more details about their characters will be finalized closer to the premiere.
Director
The presence of James Cameron behind the cameras continues to be essential in the franchise. He was its creator and main promoter, although in the second installment he had the help of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver in the script. For the third he has opted for a change, because here he writes the script in collaboration with Shane Salermo (‘Savages’).
‘Avatar 3’ will be Cameron’s tenth feature film, although it is fair to point out that his involvement in ‘Piranha II: The Vampires of the Sea’ was reduced, since he was fired shortly after commenting on the filming. His filmography also includes titles such as ‘Terminator’, ‘Aliens: The Return’, ‘Terminator 2: The Final Judgment’, ‘Risky Lies’ -hopefully one day we will see that sequel that he promised us and ended up discarding due to the terrorist attacks of 11 of September- or ‘Titanic’.
Trailer, poster and images
No official image of ‘Avatar 3’ has yet been released, which is logical given that promotional efforts were focused on the second part. As soon as there is something, we will include it here.
The future of the series
Cameron made it clear that he was ready to close the franchise with the third installment in the event that ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ foundered at the box office, but most likely the saga take much longer in time.
