Described by some as the most ambitious science fiction film ever, ‘Megalopolis’ is a project that the filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola it has taken several decades to get ahead. Funding was always a problem to get it done and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 seemed like they were going to doom the project forever.
In the end, this has not been the case, since Coppola himself has financed a project out of his own pocket that has given rise to rumors about a most eventful shooting. The director himself has not hesitated to deny them and now the time has come to review in depth everything we know about ‘Megalopolis’ so far.
The history
‘Megalopolis’ transports us to New York, where an architect wants to rebuild the city after a devastating disaster. Parallel to this, a woman finds herself torn between the loyalty she has towards a father, a man with a very classical vision of society, and her lover, much more progressive and with her mind always on the future.
When is ‘Megalopolis’ released in theaters?
At the moment there is no scheduled release date for ‘Megalopolis’, but most likely we will have to wait until 2024 to be able to see it. After all, it is a project in which the post-production work seems complicated and the shooting has not yet finished.
Cast and protagonists
The cast of ‘Megalopolis’ is as extensive as it is impressive. Everything indicates that the main role has fallen into the hands of Adam Driverone of the actors who best chooses his projects in recent years, since he has already collaborated with such prestigious directors as Steven Spielberg (‘Lincoln’), Martin Scorsese (‘Silence’), Ridley Scott (‘The last duel’), spike lee (‘Infiltrator in the KKKlan’) or Noah Baumbach (‘Marriage Story’), without forgetting that he was Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
In addition, in ‘Megalopolis’ we will also see Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, Giancarlo Esposito, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, and Kathryn Hunter. A lot of talent so that Coppola can make a brilliant film.
Director
Everything suggests that ‘Megalopolis’ could be Francis Ford Coppola’s last film, a director who rose to fame in the early 70s thanks to the masterful ‘The Godfather’. In addition to the two sequels to that acclaimed crime drama, Coppola is also the head of titles such as ‘The Conversation’, ‘Apocalypse Now’, ‘Rumble Rule’, ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ or ‘Legitimate Defense’.
His weight in Hollywood was clearly less with the arrival of the 21st century., dealing with much lesser-known titles such as ‘The merciless man’, ‘Tetro’ or ‘Twixt’. Let’s hope that with ‘Megalopolis’ he gets closer to his most acclaimed works than to the level of his latest works.
