Reckless, the new series by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips returns to the most basic and pure black series, the pulp. A violent journey through the bottom of society.
Reckless is a twisted story of bad people, good people, and what they can do to survive, whether they’re good or bad. The new series of ed brubaker does not abandon the noir genre, but goes back to the roots, the pulp, with heroes and action, villains and more violence than necessary. Hard-boiled novels are back on the shelves, hard-boiled is back with its exaggerated tone, and in a big way.
History
Ethan Reckless was a normal guy, until he had an accident, which messed up his brain. Now his feelings travel in the back seat. He can’t work on too many things anymore, but he wants to help people. So he accepts cases where violence and his bloodhound instinct are useful. And everything goes well, until the past comes back, and strong, hard, and in full face.
Criticism
Ed Brubaker knows how to manage stories, gives them rhythm, strength, creates believable and three-dimensional characters, and above all, he likes surprises. Hard boiled is a more extreme noir, the environment or the mystery matters less than the extreme violence, Brubaker always moves close to the genre, now he enters head first in a work where the protagonist solves everything discreetly, and a lot of broken bones. Ethan and Anna are creations to last, Brubaker knows what he will do with them, and this is a presentation of everything he is going to give this saga. If you like Jack Reacher or Parker this comic is for you.
Brubaker moves in the atmosphere of the 80s leaving a general shot of what the decade wasarrival of times of hippie illusion and subsequent disenchantment, heiress of the happy 50s that were never so happy, Brubaker’s 80s are full of garbage and mediocrity, far from the image that series like stranger things sell of the decade And he fits like a glove in this story of a man who does the right thing because he begins to instinctively not know how to distinguish things well.
The drawing
The tireless writer is accompanied by his fellow sufferer in these works, Sean Phillips. That after Criminal, Fatale, Kill or be Killed or Sleeperis already so deep in Brubaker’s mind that He knows where to stretch and where to pick up the cable, what to show and what to insinuate, how to turn his friend’s words into a comic that catches you and doesn’t let you out until you finish. Again, it leaves a wonder on paper, shadows, dynamics, composition, simple but not easy, combine to leave an outstanding art, again.
That this duo leaves a new great work again is not unusual. In this case, it may be a little less complex, and it needs fewer elements or a more convoluted world, which it is, but after reading them for so long we know that it is only the beginning, and that the car is accelerating.
