Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared a personal message for Sir Elton John ahead of his farewell concert at Dodgers Stadium.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared in a compilation video showing the stars paying tribute to Sir Elton ahead of the event, which streamed live on Disney+.
In the clip, which appeared to have been filmed in the Archewell offices, Prince Harry thanked the singer for being so close to his mother, Princess Diana.
“Thank you for being the friend you were for my mother. Thank you for being our friend, thank you for being a friend to our children,” he said.
The couple have grown close to the singer in recent years, knowing Harry for a long time through his “dear” friendship with Princess Diana, and even lending the couple their French Riviera home and private jet in 2019. .
In the clip, Prince Harry wore a blue suit and white shirt, while Meghan wore a dark brown blouse. It appeared to have been filmed in his Archewell offices, and in the background you could see a pair of double doors bearing the logo of his foundation.
The couple said “Hello Elton” before Meghan said: “We just wanted to congratulate you! We are so proud of you and so thankful we got to see you on your farewell tour too.”
“Thank you for entertaining everyone for so many decades. Thank you for being the friend you were to my mom. Thank you for being our friend, thank you for being a friend to our children, and thank you for entertaining people around the world. This is officially over though. your retirement, this won’t be your last concert and we know it. We love you and congratulations on your amazing career,” Harry said.
The clip ended with Meghan placing her head on Harry’s chest and blowing a kiss at the camera. The famous musician Sir Elton was a good friend of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, and maintained a close relationship with the duke after his death in 1997.
Sir Elton and his husband David Furnish were also among the many celebrity guests invited to Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May 2018.
The Sussexes visited the palatial £15m home, owned by Sir Elton John and David, overlooking the Promenade des Anglais while on holiday on the French Riviera in August 2019.
The trip to Nice came shortly after Harry and Meghan returned to the UK by private jet from Ibiza after a six-night break on the Spanish island to mark the duchess’s 38th birthday.
Elton later released a statement defending the couple, saying he had paid for the private plane, after there were violent comments against them for using four private planes in 11 days in 2019, calling Princess Diana one of their “dearest friends” whose family “felt a deep sense of obligation to protect.”
Elton talks to Harry and Meghan every day. He is an inspiration, an almost “motherly” figure, a royal told the Mirror in 2020.
“He is a constant support, especially for Meghan, and is very protective of both of them,” they added.
While a source close to Sir Elton added: “He’s been their rock. So while he’d never tell them what to do, he’s been a listening ear and support throughout.”
