Not all the films that arrive on the platforms may be exclusive releases or titles that could be seen in theaters shortly before. It also has to make room for works from several years ago and now we have new proof of that, because amazon has uploaded the mythical ‘Cape of Fear’ to Prime Video.
Why is it worth getting back?
Released in 1991, ‘Cape Fear’ is based on a novel by John D MacDonald which was already adapted by J. Lee Thompson with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum in the leading roles. That film was already notable – and is paid tribute to with brief appearances by Peck and Mitchum – but the new version directed by Martin Scorsese it is slightly above. In my opinion, of course.
From ‘Cape Fear’ The interpretation of Robert De Niro was especially impacted, becoming imitated on many occasions. In Spain, many of us surely remember her “Abogadooo”, but her performance even served as the basis for one of the most legendary episodes of ‘The Simpsons’. Logical that the Academy recognized her work with an Oscar nomination.
The other nomination the film won was for Best Supporting Actress for a Juliette Lewis, whose dynamic with De Niro is especially suggestive. It is true that it is still an extension of the rivalry between Max Cady and the character of Nick Noltebut adds another badass element that feels great to the film.
To all this must be added the more than notable work of Martin Scorsese behind the cameras, who came here more than ever in his career to the style of Alfred Hitchcockeven going so far as to hire the legendary Saul Bass, with whom he had already collaborated on the extraordinary ‘One of Us’, to take care of designing the opening credits.
