Gentleman Moon came to an end last Wednesday, and did so with the most action-packed chapter of the entire series. Two giant versions of Konshu and Amit fight in front of the pyramids of Egypt, while mortals face each other in the streets of Cairo. However, as expected, this ending also had other alternative versions that were finally discarded.
Muhammad Diab, who was the director of the last chapter, recently revealed that originally the final battle was quite different. At first, the idea was that it would take place inside the chamber of the gods.
I remember the way the whole action sequence at the end was written and it was completely inside the chamber of the gods, everything. And I just thought, ‘No, we want to see Cairo at night.’ I want to see something outside and continue to develop. Everyone intervenes. Everyone intervenes. So it’s very hard to take credit unless I remember. So I don’t remember, but I love it. And I love that people saw Cairo by day in episode three and how different it is from the perspective that people have in the desert, and how it looks at night, which is another beauty. I love it.
Diab delved into the shooting process, which was obviously challenging given the mix of real and CG characters, as well as the size contrast between humans and gods.
It was just like the other action sequences, you draw it with a fantastic artist and then you move it in preview, and then you shoot it exactly the way you envisioned it. So there are three or four processes and you keep running it in the preview until you know exactly what you want to do, and sometimes you outline it on the spot.
