It’s normal that Netflix focus on promoting more of those original productions of his, but then the platform finds unexpected successes in catalog titles that seemed already forgotten. That has been the case of ‘The Hour of the Spider’, a film that failed in theaters at the time and whose popularity has resurfaced in Spain thanks to Netflix.
‘The hour of the spider’ is the sequel to ‘The collector of lovers’ with which Hollywood wanted to establish a suspense franchise led by Morgan Freeman. For this they had a multitude of novels starring the character of Alex Cross, but the box office result was far below expectations and the saga never went beyond that. Well, it is true that in 2012 a reboot was attempted with ‘In the mind of the murderer’, a horrible film starring Tyler Perry that crashed with a bang at the box office.
Released in 2001, the first big problem with ‘The Hour of the Spider’ is that it is a film that resorted to formulas that at that time were already losing favor with the publicWell, let’s not forget that it hit theaters just months after ‘CSI’ revolutionized American television.
It doesn’t help that it’s a movie either. quite conventional in every sense and that the enigma it proposes is poorly posed and its crazy resolution ends up being more nonsense than anything else. Yes, it’s true that Freeman contributes something of knowing how to be so that everything is less hackneyed, but in the end what we have here is more of a tape to have in the background without paying much attention to what is happening because it does have a solvent appearance. I do not rule out that this has been key to its good reception on Netflix.
The only pity that leaves the film is that Hollywood I would never entrust a franchise to Freeman againan actor who seems doomed to shine in secondary characters.
