Two years after Netfilx announced that it would also offer its live-action adaptation of the popular video game saga ‘Resident Evil’ in the form of an eight-episode series, the streaming platform has just made public a first trailer that you can see on these lines and that promises an orgy of action and terror in an undead key.
Welcome to New Raccoon City
Set in two time lines, this new ‘Resident Evil’ moves away from the canon of Capcom’s playable franchise to invite us to accompany Albert Wesker’s family, including his two daughters Jade and Billie. As the trailer points out, the sisters end up separating and the action will take place in the devastated London of 2036 in which Jade, now an adult, struggles to survive.
If you want to go into more detail about its plot, here I leave the official logline:
“Year 2036. 14 years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse, Jade Wesker struggles to survive in a world infested by insane, bloodthirsty infected creatures. In the midst of this utter carnage, Jade is haunted by her past in New Raccoon City, because of his father’s chilling connections to the Umbrella corporation, but mostly because of what happened to his sister Billie.”
On paper, things look interesting enough, and the cocktail of relentless action, terror and some brushstrokes of gore that can be sensed in the advance could make the production appealing to fans of the genre. For now, I’m going to remain skeptical and I’ll wait to get my hands on, at least, the first episode, to pass sentence.
In order to sink our teeth into ‘Resident Evil’ we will have to wait for the next July 14when we can see Lance Reddick, Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Paola Nuñez and company put under the command of showrunner Andrew Dabb —’Supernatural’— in this episodic production.
