The Netflix streaming platform handles controversy well and they have certain programs that they are not willing to remove from their catalog.
Since a time ago Netflix has received a lot of harassment on social networks for having content from the famous comedian Dave Chappelle whom they accuse of being anti-trans. Now, something similar is happening with Ricky Gervaiswho has just released his new special style “the comedy club” on the platform.
But the boss of Netflix, Ted Sarandosdefends Ricky Gervais saying that it is impossible to please everyone: “We’re programming for a lot of diverse people who have different opinions, different tastes, and different styles, and yet we’re not doing everything for everyone. We want something for everyone, but not everything is going to be for everyone.
He said something similar when asked about Dave Chappelle: “It was an opportunity to cast someone, like in the case of Dave, who is, in every way, the comedian of our generation, the most popular comedian on Netflix for sure. Nobody would say that what he does is not thoughtful or intelligent. You just don’t agree with him.”
Now there is a great debate about freedom of expression.
Doing comedy is very complicated, since it is something totally subjective, because not everyone likes the same thing. In the case of Dave Chappelle He has repeatedly said that he is not anti-trans, even though he makes jokes about it. something similar to Ricky Gervais, although he usually takes advantage of this controversy for his own benefit to make jokes in his shows. Now both are in Netflix and each subscriber of the platform has the possibility to see them or not. While the debate continues as to whether anything goes in the name of humor or there should be taboo topics that no one should laugh at.
