Although The Sandman series remains faithful to the source material, Neil Gaiman explains why this series is not located within the DC Universe
The first season of The Sandman has arrived on digital platforms, and one of the acclaimed aspects of the series is the fidelity they have with the source material, and some fans still do not believe that this mythology is part of the DC Universe.
Do not miss: Death and other Sandman characters take the pages of DC
Speaking of the DC Universe, as we well know, the characters created by Neil Gaiman have crossed paths with the heroes and villains of this publishing house, such as Superman, Batman, Lex Luthor, and even the name Sandman comes from DC stories in the 40s.
But in the first season of the series we do not see Morpheus or the Eternal alternate with heroes like Martian Manhunter, who is the first hero to appear in the stories written by Gaiman, something that the author explains in an interview with Variety.
“The Sandman itself started out as a comic book in the DC Universe, and then just ended up wandering around in its own place… His world became more and more attached to our world and became less and less of a world where the fighters against him costumed crime flies… When The Sandman ended, it had its own aesthetic that wasn’t really the DC Universe.”
However, Gaiman did not miss the opportunity to pay tribute to Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, the duo who created Captain America in Marvel and in DC gave Sandman a second stage, a hero who arrived in the 1940s.
“We love DC Comics… Bringing Jack Kirby and Joe Simon’s Sandman as the dreams of a 12 year old was a huge dream”.
Welcome to the world of dreams and nightmares
The Sandman follows in the footsteps of Morpheus, the God of sleep, and his impact on the world, as he tries to right the cosmic and human mistakes he made during his existence.
The result is a rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend seamlessly intertwine.
The Sandman premieres its first season on August 5 on the most famous platform in the world.
